Sydney Shafroth Macy to be awarded Stuart P. Dodge Award for Lifetime Achievement in Conservation at Southern Colorado Conservation Awards

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO – With more than 40 years dedicated to conservation, hundreds of thousands of acres protected through her work, and more than $1 billion provided toward conservation through statewide programs she helped initiate, Sydney Shafroth Macy exemplifies a lifetime of conservation. Macy will be awarded the Stuart P. Dodge Award for Lifetime Achievement at the ninth annual Southern Colorado Conservation Awards (SCCA) hosted by Palmer Land Trust on October 3.

Macy’s accomplishments include:

Envisioning and completing the permanent conservation of a 12-mile corridor encompassing 35,000 acres and 20 separate properties valued at more than $100 million along I-25 between Monument and Castle Rock;Helping launch the Great Outdoors Colorado program that has provided more than $1 billion to statewide conservation efforts since 1992 and has achieved remarkable conservation results across the state;The protection of Mueller State Park and the Dome Rock Wildlife Area, including a $400,000 private fundraising campaign, the largest for Colorado at that time.

With her no-nonsense, results-oriented approach to conservation, Macy has left an indelible mark on Colorado and the west over the course of her career, completing well over 100 individual conservation transactions that have protected hundreds of thousands of acres.  A short film will be made about her work in conservation.

About the Southern Colorado Conservation Awards

SCCA is the premier awards event for conservation in southern Colorado. Since the first award ceremony was held in 2009, this event has brought attention to the hard work, the discipline, the sacrifice, and the impact of conservation work by recognizing the efforts of individuals and organizations who prioritize the identity, economy, and quality of life we expect in Colorado. Over the course of nine years, community and state-level leaders, non-profits, and national organizations have attended to honor the people who press Colorado forward by working to maintain our landscape, our biodiversity, and our farming and ranching communities. Those recognized ensure every generation has the opportunity to enjoy the Colorado we know and love.

As with years past, each award winner will be featured in a brief film at the event on Wednesday, October 3, at The Antlers Hotel in Colorado Springs. Cocktails are at 5 p.m., followed by a farm-to-table dinner and program at 6 p.m. Tickets are $135 with an early-bird ticket option of $100 until June 30.
