Jim and Jackie Ramsey have protected over 3,500 acres of shortgrass prairie ranchland in western Pueblo County. The Ramsey Ranch has been in continuous agricultural use since it was homesteaded in the early 1900’s. A conservative number of cow/calf pairs are grazed on the ranch on a year round basis. No farming is currently taking place.
The ranch is comprised of sandsage shrubland vegetation community and native shortgrass prairie grasslands, much of which is placed in the Conservation Reserve Program. These communities provide valuable habitat for many small mammals, reptiles and amphibians, breeding habitat for migratory and residential songbirds, and foraging habitat for pronghorn antelope.
